HOW TO MEASURE PATIENTS FOR COMPRESSION HOSIERY
MEASUREMENT TIPS
Measurements should be taken with the person standing, feet flat on the floor.
For foot measurement: stand on a plain sheet of paper, mark at the toe and at the heel; remove the foot and measure between the points; this will provide a more accurate reading.
Measure one leg at a time and measure both legs – they can be different sizes
When possible, measurements should be taken first thing in the morning, when the limb is at its thinnest and before any leg swelling develops.1
Remember to document all measurements in the patient’s case notes so you can monitor any changes in the limb shape and size.
1. NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries
If your patient is unable to stand, you can take the measurements with patient sitting with feet and legs at right angles to the floor.
